The Rehabilitation and Protection Group (RPG) in MSF carries out work in protecting children and vulnerable adults, and rehabilitating youth and adult offenders. This internship sits across two products supporting that mission. 1) RPG Greenfield Initiatives A small cross-functional team that takes ideas from problem discovery through to a working product. In this project you will have the opportunity to validate problems directly with rehabilitation and protection officers, then help design and build the solution. 2) SAFER (Sensemaking Alerts for Frontline Engagement and Response) SAFER is an operational capability supporting child protection work. SAFER continuously monitors individuals linked to child protection cases and generates household-level risk scores from MSF and partner agency data. When risk thresholds are crossed, it surfaces cases for timely triage, enabling case managers and frontline officers to act early on households at risk of child abuse.

Learning Outcomes

- Learn to take a product from problem discovery to shipped feature by working closely with the Product Manager and UX Designer to scope, prototype and iterate on solutions - Develop user experiences for rehabilitation officers, protection officers and service recipients and learn to translate operational needs into technical requirements - Learn how to design, build and maintain data pipelines as well as the scoring/alerting logic that SAFER runs on top of them. - Develop proficiency in writing and implementing testing for software systems where accuracy, auditability and data protection are extremely important.

Prerequisites

- Programming Fundamentals: Proficient in Python and has had exposure to Python data tooling (e.g. pandas), with the ability to write clean, testable, maintainable code. - Web Development: Some hands-on experience building a web application with a backend service/API using any web stack. Coursework and personal projects are counted. - Attributes: Looking for a team player with strong communication and collaboration skills. It is also extremely beneficial to be detail oriented as you will be expected to audit and review code. - Bonus, but not expected: Familiarity with Typescript/React; Exposure to data pipeline frameworks (e.g. Dagster); Familiarity with Docker or any cloud platform; An interest in owning features and building high-stakes software
