This project focuses on designing and building a rule processing engine that powers a Data Loss Prevention system, capable of evaluating data flows against configurable policy rules to detect and respond to potential data exfiltration or mishandling. The intern will work alongside data security and platform engineers to understand DLP policy requirements, architect a scalable rule evaluation pipeline, and implement a working engine that can parse, match, and act on rules across structured and unstructured data. The project offers hands-on exposure to data security concepts, policy-as-code design patterns, and the engineering challenges of building high-throughput, low-latency security tooling in enterprise environments.

Learning Outcomes

- Understand the fundamentals of Data Loss Prevention and how DLP policies are structured and enforced in enterprise environments. - Gain practical experience designing and implementing a rule engine, including rule parsing, condition evaluation, and action dispatch. - Learn how to work with structured and unstructured data formats and apply pattern matching techniques such as regex, keyword detection, and classification heuristics. - Develop skills in writing performant, maintainable backend code with a focus on correctness and security. - Understand how data security tooling integrates into broader security operations and compliance workflows.

Prerequisites

- Familiarity with at least one backend programming language such as Python, Java, Go, or TypeScript. - Basic understanding of data structures and algorithms, particularly those relevant to pattern matching and rule evaluation. - Some exposure to software design principles and the ability to translate requirements into working code. - An interest in data security, privacy, or compliance is a plus. - Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently on an open-ended engineering problem.
