- Develop hands-on skills in user research and discovery — conducting interviews, surveys, and usability sessions with government agency users and business partners.
- Learn how to identify and segment user groups (e.g. API publishers vs. subscribers, technical vs. non-technical agency staff, G2G vs. G2B users) and articulate their distinct needs.
- Practice breaking down ambiguous problems into measurable components using frameworks such as jobs-to-be-done, opportunity scoring, and root cause analysis.
- Define and track product metrics — including usage metrics, adoption funnels, service health indicators, and user satisfaction scores — to evaluate whether a problem is improving.
- Gain experience writing and refining product artefacts: user stories, problem statements, acceptance criteria, and lightweight PRDs.
- Participate in the full product delivery cycle alongside engineering and design: discovery, prioritisation, sprint planning, release, and retrospective.
- Build stakeholder communication skills through structured problem briefings, user insight summaries, and sprint demos.
- Understand the constraints unique to government digital products: compliance requirements, multi-agency politics, procurement cycles, and public accountability.
- Experience Agile team practices including sprint ceremonies, backlog grooming, and cross-functional collaboration.
- Develop a product intuition for platform products — where the "customer" is a developer or agency, not an end citizen — and the implications for how you measure value.
