The Design Practice is our in-house team responsible for the end-to-end design of government digital services — spanning UI/UX design, design systems, user research, and visual/brand design. Rather than working on a single product, the team supports design needs across multiple government digital projects, ensuring consistency, usability, and good design standards throughout. As an intern, you will work closely with our designers and researchers across the practice, gaining exposure to real projects at various stages — from user research and usability testing, to UI/UX design for digital services, to contributing to our design system and component libraries. You will also take ownership of a specific design exploration project, where you'll get to lead a design challenge end-to-end — from problem framing and research through to prototyping and presenting your solution to the team. This is a great opportunity to build a well-rounded design portfolio while learning how design is practiced in a government context.

Learning Outcomes

- End-to-End Design Process: Gain hands-on experience taking a design challenge from problem framing and research through to prototyping and final presentation. - User Research & Usability Testing: Develop skills in planning and conducting user interviews, usability tests, and synthesizing findings into actionable design decisions. - UI/UX Design for Digital Services: Learn to design user flows, wireframes, and high-fidelity prototypes for government digital services, with a focus on accessibility and usability. - Design Systems Thinking: Understand how to work with and contribute to a design system, including component libraries and design standards, to ensure consistency at scale. - Design Communication: Build confidence in articulating design rationale and presenting design work to stakeholders and cross-functional teams.

Prerequisites

- Currently pursuing a degree/diploma in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field. - Familiarity with design tools such as Figma (or similar prototyping/UI tools). - Basic understanding of UI/UX design principles and the design process. - Prior coursework or project experience in user research will be an advantage.
